This blog post was originally posted on August 31, 2014 and was updated on August 30, 2017.

Vermouth drinking in Barcelona has always been a deeply-rooted tradition within the Catalan culture. It wasn’t until recent years though that it saw a resurgence in popularity. Aside from plenty of century-old bodegas that seem to never change, there are dozens of modern bars that are breathing new life into the revered aperitif tradition. To save you time we’ve made a selection of the top 10 best vermouth bars in Barcelona for you to taste the best this city has to offer!

As a show of respect, let’s begin with one of the most classic and old-school vermouth bars around—Quimet i Quimet. Boasting over 100 years of history, its high wooden beams and shelves of dusty bottles are as authentic as they come. The conservas, a very popular snack of canned shellfish are hugely popular among the locals. They also have plenty of freshly prepared montaditos or little sandwiches, that are the perfect way to hold you over until your late Spanish lunch.

Address: Carrer Poeta Cabanyes, 25

There’s something magical about this great little spot hidden in the heart of the Born. Not only do they make their own homemade vermouth, but they also make a number of varieties. The result is two delicious versions of our favorite aperitif to choose from while enjoying the funky atmosphere and surroundings that make this place so unique. Make sure to visit on Wednesday nights to enjoy some truly fantastic local jazz artists who perform here each week. Vermouth and jazz are definitely two of our favorite things to enjoy—especially simultaneously!

Address: Carrer del Pou de la Cadena, 8

Having recently joined the ranks of the gastronomic offer on Blai street in Poble Sec, Bodega la Tieta is already a favorite of the local food and drink scene. A minuscule bar with no tables inside makes it the perfect spot to mingle with locals at the bar. If you fancy resting your feet after a long day of exploring Barcelona, your best bet is trying to grab a table on their lovely tree-lined terrace. The food is all fantastic, but our favorite thing to grab here is the chickpeas with prawns. Trust us—it’s delicious, especially when it’s washed down with a vermouth!

Address: Carrer de Blai, 1

A few blocks up and out of the hustle and bustle of Calle Verdi you will find the most curious of vermouth bars. Bodegas Ca’l Pep is one of those places that transport you back to a time when the local bodega was the epicenter of the local community. Close to 80 years of age, this place has all the basic elements of an authentic bodega. Filled with wooden beams, dusty wine barrels and vintage posters that have no aesthetic rhyme or reason. The same people are always sitting in the same place, so grab a drink and a snack and join the crowd.

One of our favorite Barcelona vermouth bars, Casa Mariol is located just minutes away from the Sagrada Familia. The small and comfortable bar is rather new and not the traditional style vermouth lair you may be used to seeing in the city. While sipping, you can enjoy some of the best canned food in the city, along with excellent sandwiches called clothes. These are typical of the Terra Alta region of Catalonia, which is where the winery is based. As of our last visit, the menu is only available in Catalan so brush up on your language skills and be adventurous!

Address: Carrer Rosselló, 442

This old fashioned vermouth bar is a legend in the Barceloneta neighborhood, and with good reason too. The ambiance is as casual as it gets here and as you’d expect the vermouth is also. They leave the bottle on your table and when you’re done you tell them how many glasses you’ve poured. Be careful though, as you could end up drinking a lot more than you realize! The food here is simple but delicious—which will no doubt leave you happy and smiling.

Address: Carrer Sant Carles, 15

Morro Fi is the name of a blog owned by three foodie friends who eventually opened up this bar together. Their signature drink is their house vermouth and tapas that could have been made in mom’s kitchen. Morro Fi has a more modern twist than your typical vermouth bar. However, the tapas here are as classic as ever. Definitely one place we love to visit for a pre-dinner vermouth.

Address: Carrer Consell de Cent, 171

Arguably Barcelona’s most famous vermouth bar because of its incredibly talented owners, Albert and Ferrán Adrià, Bodega 1900 actually serves a blend of Martini, which is an Italian vermouth. Of course, this would be hard for us to recommend if their food wasn’t so delicious! It’s a great way to try an Adria family restaurant in a more relaxed environment.

Address: Carrer Tamarit, 91

One the best vermouth bars in Barcelona is the traditional Vermutería del Tano is the place to come on Saturday afternoons in Gracia. Enjoy a vermouth with some of their excellent tuna conserves, and definitely order a bag of artisanal potato chips with their special sauce.

There’s nothing quite like sipping on a perfect glass of chilled vermouth. Don’t miss out on some of our favorite places to experience it in some of the best vermouth bars in Barcelona.
